Privacy

New media and the internet poses a risk to the privacy and confidentiality of everyone in the world including corporations and politicians. Nowadays, everything is saved on the internet no matter when you posted and/or if you deleted it. As discussed in the article, "Attack Ads Marks New Era For Millennials Running For Office", videos and posts made by people (the younger generation) running for office, has been brought to light. These videos, made for entertainment purposes and for fun, are being misinterpreted as "not fit for office" or "privileged frat boy" which ultimately undercuts and undermines the candidate's candidacy for office. People are no longer safe. From old posts and videos dug up from the past to ruin someone's life to confidential documents being leaked online. Nothing is private anymore and nothing belongs to you. Everything that goes onto the internet is owned by that company, not you. Instagram owns all of your content and so does Facebook. People now have to think twice before you upload something on the internet. They pose the risk of "how will this affect me in 5-10 years"?

  1. I agree with your view. in this day and age, nothing is really private anymore. One big data leak can be enough to destroy someone life or reputation, especially if the data is very sensitive. It doesn't just have to be social media, it can be any place you give sensitive information. One example is the Ashley Madison breach. Ashley Madison is a discrete dating site where married people can cheat. once this leak occurred, many people where outed as cheaters and essentially had their lives ruined once they were discovered. While many people weren't sympathetic to these cheaters, this can go to show what can possibly happen to other people if a different data breach occurs. This in it of itself is very worrisome, and there seems to be no changes to regulation safety and privacy in the U.S. At this point technology is advancing in faster than how our government can react to changes in the industry.
